DIY - Fake leather clutch

The blog has been a little quiet at the end of this week, I've been really sick and when i finally got better i went to Roskilde Festival, which I cant wait to tell you all about! BUT, one of the other intersting things i did this week was making my own fake leather clutch. I was inspired by a post on one of my favourite blogs (you can find the post here), and even though the bag may take a while to make, its actually not as hard as i make it sound.

All you need to make this is this:

  • A piece of fake leather (mine was 66x32cm)
  • 2 wooden stiks
  • (And well a sowing machine, a pair of scissors and a helping grandma cant hurt)

Ill try to explain how to make the bag without making it too complicated.

STEP 1: To start with you take your fabric and fold the long sides in about 2 cm in each side. You pin it and sow it as close to the middle of the fabric as possible.

STEP 2: Hereafter you take each end of the fabric and on the sides where you havent sown you cut a square hole in a size to your liking. I think mine turned out to be about 7x10cm but you can cut it however you want (just remember the sides have to be fold down later so if you cut the hole too short it might even disappear)

STEP 3: Now you have to figure out how big your sticks are, (I think mine were about 1cm in diameter) and fold the shorter side (where you just cut the handle-hole) down accordingly. (I folded mine down by 3 cm). You just pin the side down and sow it as close to the side as possible in order to get the biggest hole possible.

STEP 4: When youve sown the sides, you measure the sticks and cut them to be about ½-1 cm shorter then the fabric on the shortest side.

STEP 5: You take the newly fittet sticks and put them in the 3 cm folds you've just sown, as the sticks are in you can sow the ends shut. I suggest you continue the seem down for about 10 cm, because thats about how much you will need to open the bag propperly.

STEP 6: Now you fold the sides together and stich them at the very edge so you make sure te fabric doesnt flap. I suggest you sow them from the top so you can try to start the seem where your 10 cm seem stopped, that way it looks more clean.

A good tip is to make a test bag first of a cheap material (maybe an old sheet) so youre sure your measurements etc add up, other then that all i can say is; Good luck! x
